Tax preparation is easier when the documents are organized and every question can be discussed in the language you understand best. Pelham families and business owners may have income from wages, contract work, a company, investments, or several sources at once.
Use this guide to prepare for a tax appointment, but remember that the records needed depend on your individual situation.
Bring photo identification, Social Security or ITIN information for people included on the return, and a copy of the prior-year return when available. If your address, marital status, dependents, or bank information changed, tell the preparer before filing.
Collect every W-2 and 1099, including forms for contract work, payment apps, interest, retirement income, and unemployment. Self-employed clients should also organize invoices, deposits, mileage, equipment purchases, supplies, insurance, and other business expenses.
Depending on the return, your preparer may need childcare information, education forms, health-insurance documents, mortgage interest, charitable contributions, or records connected to a new child or dependent. Ask before assuming that an expense qualifies.
Keep confirmation of federal and Alabama estimated payments. If you moved, worked in more than one state, or received a tax notice, bring the related dates and letters. Do not ignore a notice simply because you do not understand it.
Ask how income was reported, which credits or deductions were included, whether a balance is due, and what to expect next year. You should understand the return before authorizing it.
