An EIN and an ITIN are both used in federal tax administration, but they identify different taxpayers and are requested through different processes.
An Employer Identification Number generally identifies a business or other entity for federal tax purposes. A business may need one for employees, certain entity types, tax filings, banking, or other administrative requirements.
The responsible party and legal business information must be entered consistently. An EIN should not be requested repeatedly for the same entity unless IRS rules call for a new number.
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is for certain individuals who need a U.S. taxpayer identification number but are not eligible for a Social Security number. It is commonly requested with Form W-7 and supporting identity and foreign-status documentation.
An ITIN is used for tax processing. It does not authorize employment, change immigration status, or provide Social Security benefits.
An individual owner may use an ITIN on personal tax filings while a business uses its EIN for business accounts and filings. One does not substitute for the other.
The right application depends on who needs to be identified and for what tax purpose. New Century Business Services offers bilingual ITIN assistance and business tax setup support in Alabama.
