People often use “LLC,” “EIN,” and “ITIN” in the same conversation, but each serves a different purpose. Understanding those differences helps an Alabama entrepreneur ask better questions and avoid incomplete setup.
An LLC is a legal entity formed under state law. An EIN is a federal tax identification number for a business. An ITIN is a federal tax-processing number issued to certain individuals who are not eligible for a Social Security number.
Having an ITIN does not automatically create a business or replace an EIN. It also does not determine immigration status or provide work authorization.
Consider the owners, business name, registered agent, management structure, business activity, expected employees, and tax needs. Check name availability and understand which Alabama filings and fees apply. Legal and tax consequences can differ, so seek qualified legal advice when entity ownership or agreements are complex.
Banks and agencies set their own identification and documentation requirements. Ask what they accept before an appointment.
Formation is only the beginning. Keep business finances separate, document owner contributions and withdrawals, file required returns, renew licenses, and update records when addresses or ownership change.
